Summary/Abstract: An important requirement with the European integration and accomplishment of justice is the protection of witnesses. Law No. 682/2002, completed with the amendments to the Criminal Procedure Code under Law No. 28/2003 and under Urgent Government Ordinance No. 109/2003, regulate – for the first time in Romania – protection of and assistance to witnesses whose lives are in danger as a result of information related to serious crimes and who have a decisive role with unveiling of the perpetrators and solving uncommon cases in terms of the social risks. Based on the respective law, the National Office for Witness Protection was established in the framework of the Ministry of Administration and Interior. The office is authorized to cooperate with similar structures in other countries and benefit from funds coming from external financing programmes. This institution has specific activities by which witnesses are included in witness protection programmes while coordinating these activities at the level of policy. The gross number of applications registered since the NOWP was established and the importance of the criminal law cases where such applications were filed prove the usefulness of this structure within the Romanian judicial system.
