Summary/Abstract: This article reviews the major policies and activities of the European Union addressing the issue of social and economic integration of Roma which were undertaken in the last few years. After the 2004 and 2007 EU expansion majority of European Roma became European Union citizens. However, many of the 12 million Roma in Europe face discrimination, intolerance and social exclusion both in the “old” and the “new” member states. Beginning with a brief demographic and social profile of Roma, the author looks at the goals, opportunities, obstacles as well as the existing EU legislative framework for Roma integration which is imperative for the European Union and its member states.
