Summary/Abstract: Petar Dachev (1896–1968) is a Bulgarian artist and author of the book of reports „The Unknown Constantinople“ (1942), who in the 1920s, during the complex transition from empire to republic, lived in Constantinople in search of the Orient. and the Oriental. His ten-year stay in the ancient city left a deep imprint in his work, transforming him into a prominent representative of post-orientalism in the Bulgarian cultural traditio. His devotion to the nearby Orient, in the form of Constantinople, makes him comparable to the French medernist writer Pierre Loti – a rather controversial figure in the Bulgarian cultural tradition (mostly because of Vazov‘s opinion of him). The article offers three newly discovered reports in the archives of Peter Dachev in Dobrich, which contain topoi and characters from Constantinople, and confirm the artist and writer as an undisputed authority on the subject of the Orient in the Bulgarian cultural tradition.
