Summary/Abstract: The playing of hymns is a fine art separate from the performance of organ repertoire. However, it is an area that certainly needs attention because many organ graduates will have church positions and must know how to play hymn, psalms, and other liturgical music. It stands to reason that a person with a performance degree may not be able to play the music required for the Mass. The playing of hymns and other liturgical music requires not just technical skill, but also required is attention to the mood, the phrasing, and a suitable registration considerate of the number of people singing. As our discussion unfolds we will see that many of the above characteristics are really decided by an analysis of the text.
