Summary/Abstract: The article deals with the conception of boundaries prevailing in postmodern theoretical consciousness. Two features of this conception are subjected to a more detailed examination: its critical attitude towards traditional or modernistic understanding of boundaries undergoing a virtual crisis, and the empirical nature of this conception. The article reveals main factors causing the emergence and maintenance of postmodern comprehension of boundaries, namely, the theoretical emphases upon (1) the empirical variety of the world, (2) the historical change of its phenomena and (3) the sociocultural determinacy of knowledge. Some weak points of postmodern approach to the problem of boundaries are stressed in the article: a dubious attempt to define the boundaries of phenomena at the level of their empirical apprehension; a still manifest dichotomy subject/object in some postmodern writings; a lack of a clear conception of the structure of experience and its role in the processes of human understanding of reality; an ignoring of the relation of logical implication laying at the ground of so-called binary notions; a doubtful inclination to interpret sociocultural determinacy as a factor diminishing the efficiency of human knowledge. The article ends with some conclusions devoted to general theoretical evaluation of postmodern conception of boundaries.
