The Language Used by John Paul II in Relation to the Heritage of the Polish Biblical Style (Based on the Material from Homilies and Speeches to the Poles)

Summary/Abstract: The paper is an attempt at the linguistic description of some individual (idiolectal) features of the language and style used by John Paul II in his public speeches. The author explores the language of homilies and speeches of the Polish Pope, which were delivered during pilgrimages to his homeland in the period of 1979-1999. The fundamental goal of the work is to answer the question about the type and ways in which the texts of John Paul II contained those linguistic features which are typical of the Polish biblical style, having rich models and a centuries-long tradition. Such an analysis of the Pope’s homilies targeted at the Poles clearly confirms the presence of multiple testimonies of references to the broadly understood heritage of biblical Polish language. They are expressed not only by means of references to the canonical text of the Bible, but also through indirect areas cultivating qualities of the Polish biblical style (literature, the language of traditional religious songs, prayers and church services).
