The rhetoric of news on Polish gossip websites

Summary/Abstract: The article is an attempt to interpret how the operators of gossip websites in Poland tend to adapt traditional rhetorical means. The study bases on the subject literature, portal templates and selected news in order to extract repetitive communication activities and characteristic styles which allow the authors to attract and maintain the attention of readers, while achieving the intended communication and business goals. The previous research shows that, apart from linguistic and visual means of influence, the reception of gossip news is also significantly influenced by the social practice of gossiping, which reduces the awareness of recipients and changes their expectations regarding the truthfulness of the presented messages.
