Polish Verbs {winić, obwiniać / obwinić} in the Context of English Verb Blame

Summary/Abstract: The paper aims to explore the semantic similarities and divergences between the English verb BLAME (as described by Ch. Fillmore and A. Wierzbicka) and the Polish verbs WINIĆ, OBWINIAĆ/OBWINIĆ, which seem to constitute the nearest equivalents of BLAME. Prepositions o and za occuring within the phrases containing the verbs WINIĆ, OBWINIAĆ/OBWINIĆ are analysed with respect to the notion of direct and indirect responsibility of the person accused for an undesirable state of affairs. It is argued that the Polish verbs are not in fact the only and the nearest equivalents of BLAME. OBWINIAĆ/OBWINIĆ may be used as both speech act verbs and verbs of mental judgement, whereas WINIĆ is basically used only as a verb of judgement.
