Summary/Abstract: This article consists of five sections analysing: theoretically, descriptively and qualitatively - the basic questions of evaluating quality of teaching in higher education. The article refers predominantly to the relevant authors and classics of the field of evaluation in higher education in the USA and Europe. It analyses the motives for evaluating quality of teaching in higher education, the definition of quality of teaching and of „scientific teaching“, and the discussions about the characteristics of the good/high quality and „outstanding“ teachers. The work also presents examples of criteria and indicators for measuring quality in higher education. Furthermore, it discusses the questions of the nature of relation between teaching and research work for the teacher in evaluating the quality of teaching in the context of ranking universities internationally. The final part of the article examines types of information feed-back in evaluation and the methods of quality evaluation in modern higher education (evaluation by students, colleagues, collaborators, teacher’s portfolio and teacher’s self-evaluation).
