Summary/Abstract: The author treats the icon as an object of worship and a work of painting, and from its characteristics he deduces principlesand rules of perception of the icon. The functions and values (social, cognitive, communicative, aesthetic) of the icon arerevealed. It is thought that the icon has a transcendental message, the elements of the iconic language creating a relationship oftranscendence between the believer’s image looking at the icon and the image of/ God represented on the icon. The defining features of the icon are highlighted– as an object of representing a text and as an object-means of transmitting/ communicating a written message / implicitly to the genre. In this sense, the author explains the groundlessness of theiconoclastic concept by revealing the process of perceiving icons, as well as by essential activities, producing the meanings of this process.
