Summary/Abstract: A graduate of the Military School from Bucharest, Gheorghe Anghelescu, from Gorj county, passed through all steps of a military career until he became a General and he was also the Minister of War fora short time. He proved his military capacity during the siege of Pleven, in the Russian-Romanian-Turkish War of 1877-1878 (the Romanian War of Independence, in Romanian historiography), as he acted bravely when he was commander of the 3rd Romanian Infantry Division. Shortly after wards, as commander of the 4th Romanian Infantry Division, he encircled and besieged the stronghold of Vidin. After the Romanian War of Independence, Gheorghe Anghelescu became the commander of the Active Division which, on October 8, 1878, was part of the Romanian Army triumphant march in Bucharest. Later, the Active Division was deployed at the town of Brăila, from where, on November 14, 1878, crossed Danube in Dobruja and reached the town of Tulcea, in the presence of the Romanian Army commander-in-chief, Carol I (Charles I) of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen.
