Summary/Abstract: The breakup of Yugoslavia gives an opportunity to each of the countries that were part of the socialist federation for independent development in all areas, including sports. Sports success of Croatia, Serbia, Slovenia and Bosnia and Herzegovina are used as an opportunity for international recognition for the country. In the Croatian and Slovenian case the motto „A small country for great sports achievements” is used as part of the tourist advertising. At the same time, Croats and Slovenes seek to distance themselves from the sports heritage of Yugoslavia, while Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina use selected episodes of it to reinforce national feelings.
