Summary/Abstract: The State of Democracy in Slovakia as a Subject of Discussions and Political Controversies. The paper deals with the state of democracy in Slovakia on two interrelated levels. On the first level the author analyses the political, expert and public discussion on democracy that has been going on in the Slovak context since 1989 up to now. He evaluates the functions the specific modes of discussion fulfill in promoting the democratisation of Slovak society The author brings the readers' attention the efforts of some participants in the discussion to eliminate the political process, by means of which demos should manifest itself in the period between elections, from the concept of democracy. On the second level the author analyses the ongoing political controversies in the present discussion on democracy held abroad. On the basis of his preceding analysis the author infers that the present state of democracy in Slovakia is unconsolidated and still exposed to several threats.
