Summary/Abstract: In the 19th century, Buda and Pest bore a central role in the animation of the Serbian culture and the art, including, first of all, the literature. According to the estimates, during the 19th century ten thousand Serbians lived among the Hungarians in the capital. By building up their own identity in virtue of the traditions and the new economic, social, cultural and intellectual currents, the Pannonian Serbians appeared on the horizon of the history, establishing their own national identity in the historical space they lived in. The vital Serbian population erected new churches and schools, foundations, material and immaterial cultural historic monuments (cultural and artistic associations, theatres), and created literary works as well in this region, the first Serbian performances appeared, and the Serbian language went through a considerable reform. The centre of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy was the place where the first Serbian public theatrical performance appeared. From Vienna here was displaced the printing house, where, only in the first half of the 19th century, about six hundred Serbian publications were printed. This region is inevitable as, nearly for four decades, the seat of Matica srpska. Furthermore, as the site of the fair, with the former famous national fairs, where the Serbian books, journals, calendars were sold in great amount. The Serbians were together present here from all regions. Finally, Pest was a university centre as well, where much Serbian studied, who later became prestigious personalities of the indigenous culture.
