Summary/Abstract: The organization of free elections by secret ballot, held at reasonable intervals, would not be sufficiently protected only by the application of the standard provided in art. 3 of Protocol no. 1 to the Convention for the Protection of Human Rights. This study aims to provide an overview of the connections that the exercise of the right to free elections entails with other rights protected by the Convention for the Protection of Human Rights (such as the freedom of thought, conscience and religion, freedom of expression and the right to an effective remedy).
