Summary/Abstract: Every woman can be recognized in the female characters in Shafak’s novels, both the woman from the East and the woman from the West, because the essence of the womanhood which is complex by itself, is specifically embedded in them. In this regard, Shafak as an individual, and primarily as a woman, puts her own distinctive stamp in the portrayal of the mosaic of womanhood from several cultural aspects. When she speaks about the history of the feminist movement in Turkey, about the right to vote which was given to women in 1934, Shafak points out that the secularization process in Turkey is fully implemented and it is not favorable for all women. In her novels, the modern Turkish woman is caught in the grips with stereotypes, prejudice, sexism, as well as with “honor killing”, still frequent in Turkey. Through problems and images, with specific originality and transparency, she captures her own Middle East story. With great dose of humor she manages to reveal universal female world of thoughts and dilemmas.
