Summary/Abstract: In the first half of the XIXth century, the timber trade in Moldova was deployed through log rafting on the Bistriţa and Siret, trade which was soaring in light of the new international conjuncture. The Adrianopol Treaty in 1829 is the climactic point to a series of international trades that implied a progressive economic emancipation of the Danube princedom. The liberalization of commerce at the Danube mouths has liberated from lethargy the most active segment of Romanian society – the merchants. Alongside the Turkish and Greek merchants, the Romanian tradesmen are more and more active in the commerce of the timber that comes from the forests located in the Oriental Carpathians, transported through log rafting to cities such as Galati, Braila or Sulina, from where, this precious export cargo, would be transported through navigation on the seas.
