Summary/Abstract: The purpose of this pilot study is to investigate what the competences of a modern English teacher should be. We analyze competences that were presented by the students and attempt to determine whether they give an advantage to general or communicative language abilities. We discuss the possible reasons for students’ choice and offer suggestions how training of future English teachers might be improved.
