Summary/Abstract: International competitiveness of firms and economies arouse interest of not only business but also state’s institutions and the European Union (EU). The latter should create the favourable economic, legal and demographic environment to improve competitiveness of firms and economies. In the paper there are analyzed the EU projects which aim at building competitive European economy, even if the term “competitiveness” is not in common use. The last EU project, Strategy Europe 2020, puts forward three mutually reinforcing priorities: smart growth (developing an economy based on knowledge and innovation), sustainable growth (promoting a more resource efficient, greener and more competitive economy) and inclusive growth (fostering a high-employment economy delivering social and territorial cohesion).
