Innovations and the way of their measureat the regional level

Summary/Abstract: The aim of the article is a theoretical analysis of changes in the approach to the concept and measures of innovation in the last decades, particularly measures of innovation in the EU regions. The change from linear to systemic model of innovation caused an extension of its measurement. Though statistics of innovation have developed dynamically, its measurement is still imperfect in comparison to the measurement of the rest of economic variables. Since the mid-1990s, also the regional dimension of innovation has developed, however, the limited number of accessible indicators, particularly at local level, time lags and selective data are substantial limitation to spatial analysis of innovation.
