Summary/Abstract: Two contradictory trends characterize contemporary security situation in the Black Sea region, the general trend towards regional confidence-building initiatives for cooperation (due to the positive impact of the collapse of the Soviet Union and Euro-Atlantic integration process), in contrast to the increased potential of conflict and instability in the region (due to the “frozen conflicts” war on terror, energy or New Russia). But despite the war between Russia and Georgia in August 2008, it appears that economic realities have priority over military ambitions in the region. As a transit area for oil and natural gas from Central Asia and the Middle East to Europe, the Wider Black Sea appeared with a special focus on energy security. In addition to energy issues, there are many security issues in the Black Sea, which come from the “frozen conflicts”, separatist movements, political instability and economic disparities that remain open to new opportunities for conflict or from the fact that this area may become a node of terrorist movements worldwide.
