Summary/Abstract: The unprecedented degree and speed of change at global level have transformed the whole world in the recent decades. Without exaggerating, we can say that within this process humanity has reached a unique point in its evolution. On the one hand, new opportunities have arisen to create a world order based on fairness, shared responsibilities and cooperation among all states. On the other hand, gaps in our mechanisms meant to counter the new challenges to international security environment have been highlighted. The interethnic and religious conflicts, the terrorism and separatism promoted by aggressive means, the illegal armament trade and the drugs trafficking have lately conquered more and more borders. In such an environment, it is vital to be pro-active and to develop diplomatic, economic and military means meant to counter these threats to regional and global security environment. At this time, NATO has to adopt a comprehensive and cooperative position within the security field in order to address the concerns of all the European states and international institutions.
