Summary/Abstract: The article offers an analysis of the theoretical assumptions underlying the definition of the content and aspects of the quality of the educational еnvironment, as well as an overview of empirical research in contemporary practice, which are reference for policies for the improvement of the quality of ECEC. Evaluation of the quality of the educational environment pursues different goals in different countries, but it is an important step in identifying areas of concerns and their overcoming. Special attention is paid to the various dimensions of quality - structural and procedural, as well as to the necessity to study the complex inter-relationships between them, which determine their effect on children's performance. Defining the scope and different dimensions of quality is necessary for the choice of assessment methods and their mapping to the set of criteria.
