Summary/Abstract: The creative activity of architects F. Boffo and I. van-der-Schkruf in the first half of the XIX century is well known in Bessarabia. The architect of Swiss origin Francesco Karlovich Boffo devoted 40 years of his creativity to Odessa. His innovative projects include exquisite palaces, villas, giant stairs and buildings for aristocratic circles. From 1836 until his retirement in 1856, this architect officially was in the service of the Chancellery Governor-General of Novorossia and Bessarabia. Architect Boffo worked in Poland, Crimea, Taganrog and Western Ukraine. He participated in the construction of the Chisinau prison castle and in compiling a map of Akkerman. The other architect, of Dutch origin, Ippolit Andreevich van-der-Schkruf worked in Russia, Kamenets-Podolsk in 1839-1840. From 1844 to 1850, he was in Izmail as the superintendent of government buildings. These two architects became the creators of the famous monument to the Battle of Cahul, which was built in 1849 near the village Vulcanesti. In 1844, France Boffo prepared the design and an estimate of this monument. Ippolit van-der-Schkruf was engaged in its construction. The triumphal column of the Greek order was erected in memory of events related to the defeat of the Turkish troops in 1770 by the army of the Russian General Peter Rumyantsev in the Battle of Cahul. It served as an example of the Empire style manifestation, when memorial architecture was designed to glorify and perpetuate military exploits. Last year we marked the 160th anniversary of the construction of this monument, which is a treasure of the Republic of Moldova.
