Summary/Abstract: The author makes a short but thorough depiction of the Romanian Humanism of the XVII-th century, viewed in an European context. It is the XVII-th century the period to which Nicolae Spătarul Milescu, “vir pollyglotus et pereruditus”, belongs. Through his thinking, through his varied works and activities, which range him both among the Encyclopedists and among the Pre-illuminists, he acquired the reputation of an outstanding European cultural and scientific personality. His reputation was acquired through his achievements as an author in the field of Theology and Philosophy; he was the translator of the Romanian Orthodox Bible (1661, printed at Bucharest, 1688), the author of the philosophical poem “Regarding the all-dominating reason” (published in common binding with the Bible), the editor of the Romanian translation of Lord’s Prayer (in 1669), enclosed within some books of international circulation (printed in Stockholm, 1671, London, 1700), the author of a small theological treatise, Enchiridion (written in 1667 and published in a very valuable anthology in Paris, 1669), deemed as a real Orthodox Confession, which comes next after those elaborated by the bishops Petru Movilă (Kiev, 1642) and Varlaam Moţoc (Iaşi, 1645).
