Summary/Abstract: Diamandi Manole, born 1833 in Braşov/Brasov, was a rich business magnate descended from an illustrious Brasovean merchant-family. He belonged to the brasovean merchant-class, which played a prominent role in the prevalence of the Romanian culture and also financed numerous schools and churches. Manole had a closely related circle of confidantes and family members, who all had a close relationship to the Greek Orthodox Metropolitan Andrei Şaguna and shared Manoles political relation to the Romanian National Party. He was involved in numerous Brasovean associations, and in so-called over-national organizations, where he met the upper class from other national groups. Manole was often seen as a “philanthropist”, because he donated or collected money in favor of Romanian schools or for the Romanian War of Independence 1877/78. Diamandi Manole, besides his civil-societal commitment, was known for the numerous mercantile relationships he had with the Romanian Old Kingdom (Regat). That is the reason why be became President of the Brasovean chamber of commerce and industry. Above all he was politically active, nationally in the Romanian National Party, or communally in the municipal council. Diamandi Manoles life and work is typical for the urban upper class in Transylvania from the 1850 years, particularly with regard to the Brasovean merchant-class.
