Summary/Abstract: This paper was inspired by P. Saukkonen’s article On the Concept of National Identity (1996) presented at the ‘Crossroads in Cultural Studies’ conference in Tampere, Finland. Saukkonen analyses the concept of national identity among others against the background of political and economic transformations which have taken place in Finland since the 19th century.
