Summary/Abstract: The author of this article intends to compare the functions of the nominative case in old Russian in the light of ancient languages (Greek and Latin). On the one hand, some functions are identical or analogical in all the three languages. On the other hand, in contrast to Greek and Latin, in old Russian the instrumental case early occurs as alternative of the nominative in the predicative function. The replacement of the nominative by the genitive case in negative statements occurs only in old Russian (and in other Slavonic languages). The construction of nominative with infinitive occurs only in some old Russian translations from Greek and Latin; Most mentioned features of old Russian turned also into contemporary Russian.
