Summary/Abstract: This study provides an overview of the current use of e-voting in local elections around the world. A specific objective of this paper is to identify whether the use of electronic voting in local elections leads to an increase in voter turnout. The study considers 7 countries where e-voting is allowed or where pilot projects have been implemented, and the results are mixed. The paper highlights the need for further research in this area, as increased turnout in local elections could mean more legitimacy for those to be elected and run local government, while the effect of decreased turnout would prove the limited usefulness of e-voting as it is used in its current forms.
