Summary/Abstract: A volume of literary sketches entitled ‘The journalism of Henryk Sienkiewicz. Language – style – genre’ is devoted to linguistic-stylistic and genological aspects of the journalism of Henryk Sienkiewicz. The first volume entitled ‘Around the language and style’ discusses chosen lexical aspects (for example evaluative lexicon, superlative forms) and stylistic aspects (for example clarity, word vividness, linguistic and stylistic components of the description). The thesis is for the most part material-based, and thus the features of the linguists of Litwos gain credibility. In this volume and the next ones, the sketches have been put in the chronological order, based on the time the source texts which have been included in the thesis appeared. In this way each reader of this thesis will be able to judge for themselves the style of Henryk Sienkiewicz on various stages of his linguistic career. The last sketch of the first part aims to verify the opinion of the researchers about the development of Sienkiewicz’ literary workshop, which took place over years (between his first journey to America and the last one to Africa). The second part of this thesis entitled ‘Around the genre’ is devoted to the genological aspects. The aim of the analyses was to reflect the journalistic awareness of Sienkiewicz and to define the genre features of his literary work (reviews and his account of painting exhibitions). They also tried to indicate connections between related genres. The analyses were discussed with the press and publishing undergoing changes in the background. In the third part entitled ‘Sienkiewicz’ outlook on life’ revolves around the etno-linguistic aspects of the research and concern the picture of foreign nations, ethnic communities or people whom Litwos met during his journeys to America and Africa. The sketches portray the author’s outlook on 19th-century life and his knowledge of the geopolitical reality of the world and they also discuss the main determinants of his (artistic) viewpoint on the world, its inhabitants and their language.
