Summary/Abstract: The object of the monograph is the phenomena of taboo ritual applied by participants in sequences considering a taboo subject. The analysis is based on empirical data gathered from transcriptions of everyday conversations of young speakers of Polish. It is a conversational and interactive analysis based on the assumption that while talking about taboo, the interlocutors implement a specific ritual, based on a concrete structure, organisation and linguistic mechanisms. Therefore, the taboo ritual enables the speakers to conduct the conversation due to generally accepted sociocultural rules and not threatening the interaction harmony. The aim of the investigation is to describe some elements on the conversational and interactional level, such as the types of ritual’s frontiers, its internal organisation and some specific pragmalinguistic mechanisms. The taboo ritual is treated then as a specific type of sequence that is characterized by determined structures and plays concrete sociopragamatic and interpersonal functions.
