- Summary/Abstract:The article is an attempt at pinpointing differences and similarities in ways of shaping the images of Eastern Borderlands (Kresy) of the old Republic of Poland in novels by Henryk Sienkiewicz and in Zofia Kossak’s prose. The thesis undertaken in the paper is justified merely by the fact that Stanisław Cat-Mackiewicz dubbed the authoress of "The Crusaders" “the Sienkiewicz’s daughter”. As a matter of fact, it also expresses, rather common in literary criticism, inclination to compare both types of historical writing, for instance because of placing the plots of the novels in turbulent 17th century or similar ways of their characters’ entanglement in historical events. Yet, differences between both novelistic worlds easily balance the similarities. Both writers are enthralled by Romantic tradition of Kresy description as well as clearly defined emotional attitude to those places, which nonetheless is of the various origins. In the case of the authoress of "Conflagration" it is directly biographical imperative. To Sienkiewicz, on the other hand, the image of Kresy emerges form his artistic imagination and from the readings of the literary as well as historical texts. The next element which differentiates and in some aspects makes the works of both authors resemble is their philosophy of history. The interest in history and the knowledge of it as well as literary predilection for the genre of historical novel do not result for the author of "The Trilogy" and Zofia Kossak in a similar manner of artistic creation. What is characteristic for the writings of Kossak is her indication of historical events’ mechanisms and a constant will to gain the parenetic content out of it. Notwithstanding, the Sienkiewicz’s “moralizing” is of a more intricate nature.

- Summary/Abstract:In the paper there are outlined transformations of the Kresy discourse in Polish literature (from sacralization and mythologization to unmasking and demythologization within confines of postcolonial studies). The author distinguishes various renderings of one of the key motifs of this literary current – the motif of home – by describing borderline posts, border households, cosmopolitan dwellings, and nestle-like as well as gravelike homes in different writers’ works. Subsequently, having drawn such a background, the author presents her interpretation of the motif of home in the epic cycle "On the High Pastures" by Stanisław Vincenz. The article presents the analysis of the Krzyworównia manor house’s and the Hutsulian grażda’s (folk cottage) descriptions. The juxtaposition outlines both similarities and differences of the buildings in question. First of all, the interpretation of the eponymous motif in the Hutsulian epic lets us perceive a characteristic evolution – from place that was closed (a stronghold) to a place open for otherness and encounters – which seems to be a gist of Vincenz’s anthropological and regionalistic beliefs but also an important feature of the Kresy prose in general.

- Summary/Abstract:This article concerns a novel by Andrzej Bursa entitled "Killing Auntie". The author discusses the game motif – rendered in all sorts of ways in Bursa’s works – by pointing to elements of the sender-receiver strategy employed by the writer at each level (especially the intra-textual one). The analysis of the work is, among other things, inscribed into a context of Gombrowicz-like understanding of form, as well as into a context of polemics with the schematism of socialist realism or literature dealing with atrocities of the World War II.

- Summary/Abstract:In the article there is proposed a critical look at the oeuvre of Ryszard Kapuściński from the perspective of his intellectual masters. Herodotus, Joseph Conrad and Bronisław Malinowski appear not only as great individualities in the history of the world but most of all, as incisive teachers accompanying him at different levels of his writing self-knowledge. Father of history gives Kapuściński first lesson on arcane of reportage, Korzeniowski shows him the consequences of European colonization and teaches him how to uncover the true reasons behind events, whereas Malinowski guides him to encounter with the Other. A need of mobility is common to all of them, a want of living which directly embraces the outside world and genuine care for artistic quality of their works.

- Summary/Abstract:The basis of the texts discussed in the present article is a dialogic structure, and in terms of genre, they can be classified as “talking books”, talking (prompted) diaries and – occasionally given interviews notwithstanding – they form an autonomic whole, organized self-explanatorily and focused on their goal of dialogic interaction. As can be read on the book’s back cover, its aim is “an auto-commentary by Herling-Grudziński to his oeuvre”. The author of the essay is interested in a way of perceiving Herling-Grudziński’s writing in a perspective of this monumental two-authored commentary to his oeuvre, of the questions that are being formed, and of chasing the thread of recognition which these conversations result in, that is “a manner of public thinking” in the works of the author and the publicist. The declared caution in generalizing leads authors to the form of dialogue, which is more convincing solution since it lets them to transcend subjectivity. Co-created dialogic form, accurately pinpointing the points of importance, is far more critical than memoirs-like or informative-summarizing one, and harmonizes with selfknowledge of interlocutors, their meticulous introspection, in which dimension it paves a way to the author and his work.

- Summary/Abstract:"The Rehearsal of November", despite being in some opinions the worse of Piotr Wojciechowski’s texts, seems an interesting case in the prose of last years. The article attempts to diagnose the category of temporariness in the novel in question by the author of "Stone Bees". Peculiar character that was given to the textual time displays special connections to Christian thought and, as I am trying to show, to metaphysics stemming directly from the roots of physics itself. The construction of time in the novel not only mingles elements of humanities and natural science but also seems to give foundations of contemporary Christian novel.

- Summary/Abstract:The article thematises the issue of postmodern human condition, a literary example of which is for the author of the paper a novel by Bronisław Świderski entitled "Death Assistant". Świderski’s prose is haunted by, how Kierkegaardian, questions: how to communicate with others not being identical with them, how to testify by one’s own biography not diminishing experiences of the others – and finally – how to avoid understanding “otherness” as something worse? The 21st-century novelistic world (seeing through the eyes of Świderski) still will be full of expatriates living their homelands in search of their own, total freedom and adopting various identities. It will also be full of “strangers”, hidden under pseudonyms or foreign-sounding surnames, who precisely in the name of freedom do not want to undergo compulsory acculturation in new countries of their settlement (as Świderski points out, those attempts of cultural pressure are restrictive to above mentioned freedom). From this circumstances stems the tendency of “the elect” to isolate, to erect the walls and borders protecting them form the strangers/the others. In this context a novel "Death Assistant" may be read as a warning against the traps of postmodern times.

- Summary/Abstract:In the article I describe a brief history of presence and reception of the issue of Holocaust in Polish prose. If I broaden the last period of it (embracing 1990s and the first decade of the 21st century), I only do it in order to show a radical shift towards “rhetorizing” the Shoah. I therefore treat Pankowski’s narration (published in 2008) as a final effect of rendering the phenomenon of Holocaust in less and less “documental” way in literature, which has lead to making the phenomenon its own opposite, that is – most of all, a literary text. After analyzing the rhetoric of "There Was a Jewish Girl, There Is No Jewish Girl", I present the more important phenomenon, which is the author of "Rudolf’s" disabling of anti-Semitic stereotypes with the great load of farce. As a kind of critical reconnaissance, the article anticipates serious changes in the linguistic image of the Shoah in the Polish prose of last years.

- Summary/Abstract:Katarzyna Radziejowska, a daughter of the Płock Voivode Andrzej Radziejowski, was a well-known historical figure, resulting from the fact that in 1526 she was accused of poisoning the last princesses of Mazowsze – Stanisław and Janusz. The reasons of Piast dynasty descendants’ death remain so far unexplained. The historians (since the 19th century) as well as 20th-century writers have been trying to establish facts about what happened in the third decade of the 16th century in Mazowsze and what was Katarzyna Radziejowska’s role in it. Historical novel (also those in any way concerning the figure of Voivode’s daughter) realize various strategies; psychological (the author stresses feelings and psychological motivations), mask (he is focused on rapid and dynamic course of events in the novel), political (when he wants to present important and interesting events of the age, solve the mysteries of the past, and he does it believing that people of different times are generally alike), and last but not least, anthropological (if he is aiming at reconstructing a model of man of the age). The last one demands form the author not only creative imagination but also solid knowledge about the rendered era.

- Summary/Abstract:The author interprets "Audacities of Self-Awareness" by Edward Balcerzan because of autobiographic strategies present in this book. Significant and visible are most of all relationships with other texts of the author: strictly scientific, essayistic, poetic, as well as apparently autobiographic ("Perehenia and sunflowers"). The most important proves to be the “doubleness of worlds”: real and textual, life and literature, their mutual permeating and dependence, noticed and repeatedly stressed also by the author himself: as a scholar, writer and poet.
