Summary/Abstract: The presented book is a collection of eight articles covering a variety of subjects, yet all focused around the phenomenon of network. The growing popularity of the notion of network in journalism and social studies is connected not only with the common computerisation and the Internet network becoming more and more dense, but also with a sort of trap that entangles us, constrains us, and deprives of our life forces. The “network” itself is not a new term however, and for that reason, it is one of the basic sociological terms. Being fully aware of the fact that it is impossible to present complete analyses of the theoretical problems connected with the question of ”network”, the authors decided to choose the most crucial issues being the field of interest of the scholars in the Department of Sociology of Development. The research they conduct – though seemingly diverse – finds its common ground precisely in the issue of network of interpersonal relations that occur in various areas. The whole work includes: the problem of network as a cultural phenomenon, the network of the city, of economy and the network of violence.

(The Net(work) of the Familiar Cast on the Unfamiliar World. A Bold Dialectical Approach)
- Author(s):Piotr Skudrzyk

- Subject(s):Anthropology, Social Sciences, Psychology, Communication studies, Sociolinguistics
- Page Range:15-36
- No. of Pages:22
- Keywords:Net; dialectics; Self‑Other; Kapuściński; metaphysics
- Summary/Abstract:The author utilizes dialectics as the primary methodological approach due to his conviction in the discursive power of that approach to Reality. Through this approach, then, the author finds the dialectic pair for the notion of the network, i.e. the notion of the environment. Next, on the pair “network‑environment”, the author superimposes the more interesting pair “Self‑Other” (or “familiar‑unfamiliar”). In his intent of taming the unfamiliar, the author draws abundantly from the works of Ryszard Kapuściński. The next step is directed toward the recognition of the metaphysical foundations of the phenomenon of the network, i.e. the influence of that which is collective on that which is individual. Here, in turn, the author finds certain affinity with the works of American scholars: Nicholas A. Christakis and James H. Fowler.

- Keywords:labyrinth; sociology of culture; Western culture; sociology of change; postmodern reality
- Summary/Abstract:The article constitutes an attempt at analyzing the figure of the labyrinth, which has existed in the Western culture since antiquity until the present times. The author follows the conception of the labyrinth based upon the assumption that even in the oldest civilizations, the labyrinth was conceived of as more than just a structure. Entering a labyrinth involved an inherent change in the ontological situation of the external world, subjected to the complex process of crossing the threshold. This architectural curiosity has continued to intrigue scholars and artists across the ages, becoming at the same time a reflection of the dominant intellectual, cultural and social trends at the time. The labyrinth, then, emerges as a construct which describes the external world. According to that assumption, in the second part of the article, the concept of the labyrinth is used to describe the postmodern reality.

- Summary/Abstract:The contemporary world can be characterized by the gradual increase in cultural diversity, which results from a variety of global processes. The shrinking of time and space brought together groups of people who represent a multitude of sometimes distant cultures. This cultural diversity is incorporated into the fabric of societies which operate at different levels of cultural development, including network societies. Thus, the aim of the following article is to present the relationship between cultural diversity and network society. In the first decades of the 21st century, our civilization experienced a huge technological revolution which led to an increase in the flow and volume of the transmitted information on a scale never seen before, and which influenced the means of data transmission. This process was aided primarily by the development of mobile phone technology as well as the Internet. This rapid technological change, in turn, gave rise to the network society: a society saturated withand increasingly dependent on technology. This society has been completely dominated by the computer and the Internet, while production, experience, and power constitute the pillars of its existence. On the other hand, a culturally diverse society is a society that includes various groups which represent different culture, and one that upholds and expresses the values of those cultures. When it comes to cultural diversity, it could be argues that the network society allows to come into contact with different cultures without the necessity of unmediated access. We come to know them via the Internet. We could, therefore, assume that living in the network society allows us to experience different cultures, while at the same time facilitates negative phenomena, such as verbal abuse or discrimination.

- Summary/Abstract:The answers of scholars concerning the determining factors in social, political and civic activity of individuals are based on different models which explain the reasons why some people are active while others remain passive. The article focuses on the mobilizing model, which analyzes the relationships between individuals and their social environment. The article, therefore, aims to answer the question: do familial and friendship‑orientedsocial networks affect the engagement of their participants in social and civic activity, and what is the significance of that activity depending on different conditions? The results ofa study conducted in Silesia over the past few years allow to conclude that networkswhich include people who are or used to be active in the public sphere have significant mobilizing potential in comparison to networks which do not include such socially and politically active individuals. The two types of networks referenced above create two different environments for civic socialization, which result in the emergence of significant differences in social attitudes among their members.

- Summary/Abstract:The article constitutes an interpretation of a concept developed by Ulf Hannerz which concerns the social networks functioning in the urban space and the modes of urban existence, which result from the emergence of those networks, constructed on the basis of the social roles played by the members of those groups. The concept of the modes of urban existence has been approached in the context of the use of public urban space as a site which enables people to play certain social roles and further develop the networks of social relationships. Based on that approach, the author emphasizes the significant role of urban public space in the integration mode of human existence, as well as its possible marginalization, if the inhabitants of the cities function in cloistered, segregated, or solitary modes of urban existence.

- Summary/Abstract:The beginning of the 21st century constitutes a unique period of time in the evolution of the human race. This uniqueness manifests in the fact that we are currently undergoing one of the most significant social revolutions in the history of civilization – the Age Revolution. The increase in the average life span by 30 years constitutes a crowning achievement in the evolution of humanity, but at the same time, this phenomenon brings complex and inevitable consequences. That is why it is necessary to answer the question: are we – the society in general, the local society, economy, infrastructure and environment – prepared to face them? In the recent years, it has been possible to observe an increase in the interest in designing strategies and plans as well as implementing measures which serve to minimize the negative effects of the aging process. One of the most interesting initiatives has been undertaken in Tychy (Silesia), where a network of Centers for Pensioner Support has been established. Three such centers, functioning in cooperation with three Roman Catholic churches in Tychy, provide continuous support for the elderly who feel lonely, suffer from various health problems or want to remain active members of the society. The article presents the details of this successful attempt at activating the elderly, based on the cooperation of the local government, non-governmental organizations, and the members of the local communities.

- Summary/Abstract:The article is concerned first and foremost with the media activity of terrorist groups. In the article, the author explains the reasons why terrorist organizations publish various media content in English for the broadly defined Western extremists on the Internet. The article focuses on cinematic works in particular; it characterizes the beginnings of this practice, introduces types of classification for this sort of material and traces the origins of this phenomenon. The media activity of the so‑called Islamic State (ISIS) constitutes the empirical point of reference for the article. The paper describes the most well‑known films produced by entities connected with ISIS, as well as answers the question why terrorist organization publish such brutal content online. In her argument, the author relies on definitions of terrorism which characterize this phenomenon as a way of achieving political objectives through deft manipulation by threatening to use violent force (whether it be a real or just a possible outcome) and the effect it produces.
