Summary/Abstract: The volume is devoted to defining the notion of “specialised languages,” and to presenting problems and dilemmas encountered by foreign language teachers, whose duty is to provide students with language education with elements of specialised knowledge. The texts collected in this book are the effects of experiences of practising teachers dealing with glottodidactics. Working in various educational contexts, the authors are foreign language teachers at higher education institutions or at modern philology departments of higher education institutions. This collection of texts written by teachers-glottodidacticians shows their reflections, knowledge, and practical experiences in teaching specialised languages – the expressions of their own explorations.The editors believe that this volume will become not only a source of knowledge and ideas how to cope with teaching specialised languages, but also an inspiration for further searches of teaching methods and techniques that are more motivating, effective, varied, and able to go beyond the curriculum of a language course, realised by means of less traditional didactic materials.

- Summary/Abstract:Suggesting a reflection on the relationship between a specialist language anda primary one (which is also called general, popular or natural), aiming at distinguishing between both similarities and differences, it may seem appropriate that the latter ones are more numerous. The specialist language is seen as a separate language, a specific one and, above all, causing difficulties to its learners. Even if the quoted associations seem to be justified and reasonable, we should not overlook the fact that the specialist language is isolated from the basic language, and therefore does not exist as an autonomous system, but as an integral part of the general language, while preserving its distinctness and characteristics. Therefore, by referring to the professional literature of the subject, this article will attempt to explain what connects and what divides these languages.

- Summary/Abstract:Inspired by the opinions voiced by numerous researchers and practitioners, thepaper stems from the conviction that teaching a foreign language for business purposes reaches beyond teaching a foreign language defined in more conventional terms. Recognising that a business language course can be viewed as a project pursuing specific goals and focusing on a teacher as a teaching project manager, we propose the model for assessing and developing the managerial competencies of business language teachers. The proposal draws on the competency model, commonly used in management, and the personality theory known as the Big Five. The model seems to be of particular interest to linguists and teachers as it relates to the lexical hypothesis underpinning the personality theory. It will allow for the identification of the traits corresponding to the competencies that may be expected of business language teachers as project managers in charge of a business language course. The data collected in the process may be used as part of a teacher’s 360 degree performance appraisal, comprising self-appraisal, student evaluation, peer assessment, and the evaluation conducted by a superior and/or by a customer.The outcome of the entire process may provide grounds for periodic job appraisal, but it canalso become a valuable professional development tool and contribute to a teacher’s improvedrelationships with students, colleagues and superiors.

- Summary/Abstract:This article presents proposals for didactic solutions related to business languageteaching, using the current CLILiG approach. According to the assumptions of CLIL, teaching the subject should correspond with the teaching of a foreign language. This assumption generates some problems, i.e. the participation of a teacher who should teach the content in a foreign language, his or her education, the selection of appropriate tools in the form of appropriate exercises, the needs of target groups, the linguistic specificity, the insufficient number of textbooks in which appropriate material has been developed etc. All these problems are added in a wider social and communication context. It is important to be aware that while learning the business language, you acquire professional competence at the same time.

- Summary/Abstract:Although effective communication is key to all human activity, nowhere doesit seem more important than in medicine, where clinical outcomes also depend on the clarityand precision of what health practitioners say to their patients. Since English has assumed therole of an international lingua franca, the practice of teaching English for Medical Purposes(EMP) has become even more significant. It stands to reason then that the concept of EMP isgiven adequate attention, especially with regard to identifying difficulties and improving thewhole didactic process. The present paper reviews the specialist literature in view of identifying most commonly cited problems that medical English teachers need to address in their teaching practice. The paper also reports on the study conducted to examine the extent to which EMP teachers working in higher education institutions in Poland relate to problems documented in literature. The study concludes that although some of the issues discussed in the ESP literature prove largely unproblematic for our sample, others, especially those related to teacher development and syllabus design, are reported to constitute a major problem.

- Summary/Abstract:The globalizing economy and the common European market offer opportunitiesfor international business. Reports show that small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), including those located in Podkarpackie (Subcarpathia) Province have not been fully exploiting these chances.The presented study aims to find out how employers have taken advantage of this opportunityand what role have the graduates’ foreign language competences/skills played or shouldhave played in order to enhance their chances of professional success. The pilot survey covered six districts (powiats) in Podkarpackie Province. The anonymous survey was administered online via an Internet market-research platform.The findings confirm that enterprises’ engagement in international trade may be hamperedby difficulties in communication-related (soft) skills. Employers declare that many employeesfailed to deliver in crucial moments. The problems include, besides deficiencies within thescope of technical vocabulary, the general lack of sought-after qualities helpfull in operation in ever advancing multi-cultural, interdependent business environments. Graduates, in their own opinion, need to be equipped with relevant soft skills to fully benefit from international job openings. The paper concludes that universities could and should do more, perhaps in cooperation with businesses, to develop curricula that will facilitate the preparation of future graduates for the demands of the evolving markets.

- Summary/Abstract:Although novice translators face numerous difficulties when tackling specialisedtranslation, they are eager to take up any translation task, believing that a good dictionary oronline resources can help them translate any type of text and the only problem lies in findingan equivalent lexical item. Nevertheless, learning translation of specialised texts involves much more than just vocabulary enrichment. The paper presents an experiment carried out on a group of translation students with no previous experience in translation of specialised texts. As a part of their class activity, the students were given an assignment consisting in translation of a standard legal text with the use of online or paper dictionaries, but without the help of the teacher. The aim of this study was to analyse challenges faced by novice translators confronted with a specialised translation task and to make students aware of the problems they might encounter in their future work. The results of the research can be useful for designing a translation course, as they clearly demonstrated the areas that require particular attention and care on the part of the translator trainer.

One of the biggest authorities among the experts on stylewas the late Joseph M. Williams from the University of Chicago. His academic coursebookentitled Style: The Basics of Clarity and Grace was first published in 1981 and up till nowhas had over ten editions, with the latest one published in 2015 and co-edited by Joseph Bizup. - Summary/Abstract:Undoubtedly, social media and social networks are powerful in today’s culture.They have become mainstream communication tools for users worldwide. In Poland, the proportion of active social media users on such platforms as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, YouTube and other Web 2.0 technologies continues to accelerate on its upward trajectory. The demographic characteristics of Polish social networks users show that that usage is highest among the 19-24 year old age group. Assuming that users approach social media with a meaningful and conscious mindset and engage socially to interact as well as for the purpose of seeking and sharing information, or in other words learning and researching, we may hypothesize that social media can be utilised as platforms for teaching Languages for Specific Purposes (LSP). Are social media an appropriate tool for teaching a highly specialised language? Is Facebook, the most popular social platform, the right channel to provide valuable educational content? The aim of the paper is to research educational possibilities of social media by using selected social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram, blog) to teach English for Medical Purposes (EMP).
