Summary/Abstract: In his 1907 review in the Słowo Polskie daily published in Lwów, the Polish writer Kornel Makuszyński ventured a tentatively critical judgment on The Vows, suggesting that appropriate distancing might be prerequisite when evaluating Przybyszewski’s work. That condition seems to have been met today: the passing of over a hundred years since the original publication has created not only a temporal but also a cognitive distance. A re-edition of the play offers an opportunity to read it anew. The word “read” is key here, since The Vows is by all means a literary text.
