- Summary/Abstract:The catchword “Let us give children the best we have”, which Jakub and Janina Mortkowicz gave to the children’s section that they founded in 1906, suggests that their publishing activity in the fi eld of children and youth literature was inspired by contemporary pedagogy. In the present paper an attempt is made to test this hypothesis by paying attention to two essays published in 1904: Główne cechy i zadania literatury powszechnej dla młodzieży [The main features and tasks of youth literature] by Stanisław Karpowicz and O wychowaniu estetycznym [On the aesthetic education] by Janina Mortkowiczowa herself. The analysis of their content and examples of their infl uence on books published by Mortkowicz should prove that Karpowicz and Mortkowiczowa’s essays form the pedagogical foundation of the children’s section of Mortkowicz’s publishing house.

- Summary/Abstract:The article is an attempt to show the modern trends of the publishing house of Jakub Mortkowicz in creating a book for children. The innovative concept of the book had its source in the pedagogical refl ection of Janina Mortkowiczowa, which grew out of pedagogical tendencies from the early twentieth century. The author of the article shows that the cooperation of Mortkowicz’s publishing house with Jan Brzechwa and Franciszka and Stefan Themerson was aimed at the implementation of the most important publishing mission − creating a welldesigned children’s book.

- Summary/Abstract:The article presents the most important attributes of the rural and urban school described by Janina Mortkowicz in the collection of short stories „From our school” published in 1918 and 1919. I present described schools as ideal educational institutions. I consider several issues: developing the pupils’ imagination, education through art, nature education, independence of students and the teacher. At the end I briefl y compare this ideal school with the main features of the contemporary Finnish school, described by T.D. Walker in Teach like Finland: 33 simple strategies for joyful classrooms.

- Summary/Abstract:The author analyzed two books on travel by Hanna Mortkowicz (entitled: Po obu stronach szosy – On both sides of the road; Na drogach Polski – On the roads of Poland), both referring to the geographical and travel series of the Jakub Mortkowicz Publishing Society. She refers to the characteristics of travel literature according to other researchers in order to show the specifi city of both titles, including narrative models (especially their multi-levelity character), as well as linguistic devices to achieve the real experience of the imagined space by the recipient. The author also draws attention to the encouragement for the recipient to open to otherness, which is inscribed in both works.

- No. of Pages:19
- Keywords:Jakub Mortkowicz; multiculturalism; publishing house; poetry of the interwar period
- Summary/Abstract:The author puts forward the thesis that the poetic volume of Stanisław Baliński confi rms his publishing programme and points to the modern views of Jakub Mortkowicz on the subject of multiculturalism. The analysis of Baliński’s poems leads to refl ection on the validity of publishers’ assumptions, who decided not only to publish outstanding poetry, but also to use it to realize the idea of learning about other cultures and opening themselves to otherness. The interpretation of poems in the context of postcolonial refl ection allowed to read these meanings from Stanisław Baliński’s poetry as well.

- Language:Polish
- Subject(s):Language and Literature Studies
- Page Range:157-182
- No. of Pages:25
- Keywords:Jakub Mortkowicz; poetry; aesthetics; art.; patronage
- Summary/Abstract:The article presents the problems of aesthetics undertaken by the Warsaw bookkeeper Jakub Mortkowicz, both in terms of publishing choices and attachment to the aesthetic education of Poles. Parallels and links with the European and Polish art world in the light of the edited poetry volumes are important, but so is the patronage given by Mortkowicz to poets and how he promotes Polish poetry. His visible editorial decisions are important as well as his less obvious attachments to visual and literary symbolism and his various connections with Polish poets of the interwar period.
