- Summary/Abstract:The text “Between modernism and postmodernism – the contemporary perspective of didactics of art” presents current issues involved in aesthetic upbringing, at the moment included into the broader category of cultural education, in the contexts of modernism and postmodernism. Taking tradition into consideration, particularly the avant-garde and new artistic phenomena, the author analyses the didactic potential and hazards of both these paradigms in order to outline a contemporary didactic model which would include the current theoretical thought from the areas of contemporary culture, history and methodology of art and cultural education. She describes features of personality of a potential addressee (student-artist) of the age of postmodernity and the tasks which he faces, as well as a proposal for a didactic method suited to the new visual culture (simulated, non-material image) and the student’s condition (medial, polisensory and anthropologically perceived). She reflects over hazards and possibilities, challenges and yearnings concerning the contemporary perspective of the didactics of art, which constitute the continuation of the necessary consensus between modernism and postmodernism.

- Summary/Abstract:The text “Artistic pluralism in the culture of surplus. Dilemmas and challenges of multiparadigmatic reality” constitutes an attempt at facing certain problems connected with teaching art and artistic didactics in the reality of the postmodern art. These problems stem mainly from artistic pluralism and polyphony of modern culture and art which tends towards constant redefinition and relocation. Analyzing the many forms and the surplus character of contemporary art, the author concentrates on selected paradigm sets which determine certain conceptual variations of art and the spheres of influence for mutually alternative artistic actions and re-organizations which lead in different directions. The aforementioned multiparadigmatic reality with its numerous discourses on art and, in effect, a multiplicity of narrations which denies the idea of homogeneity, delineate the leading context of the present reflections over certain challenges of the didactics of art.

- Summary/Abstract:In relation to the ongoing, permanent change of reality, its continuous and present recognition is highlighted from the perspective of a painter. It is important in building one’s own artistic creations but also in the teaching of painting. The recognition of possibilities and dangers which originate from, among others, globalization, concerns today most of all cultural identity. There are two polarizing tendencies present in culture. One is oriented towards a complete change of identity, the other relates to cultural heritage. Their recognition may enable a choice of means of expression in art relevant to reality. In teaching, this concerns shaping conscious attitudes of students. The mechanisms of some of the globalizing processes in culture and art demonstrate a similarity to processes which may be observed in other disciplines, mainly in economy. Their comparison provides knowledge of the sources of dangers in culture. Knowledge which stems from recognizing reality and the community of current experiences serves not only one’s own art but also the articulation of generational and communal messages.

- Summary/Abstract:The fundamental task of the presented essay is an indication and a discussion of a number of difficulties connected with the precise formulation of an answer to the question: what is greatness in art and how should it be understood in contemporary times? The author suggests a definition of this term and on selected examples of outstanding works and artists presents a broad range of the discussed issue. Simultaneously, he points to the complexity of the current cultural situation, which does not foster a justified glorification of currently living artists. - Summary/Abstract:In the present text, the author analyses the key issues of ex libris art and the possible approaches of a creator of bookplates in the context of modern art. Moreover, his subject interest are also several aspects of the didactics of ex libris, with an indication of difficulties stemming from the necessity of “raising a bridge of consciousness” between the nineteenth century bookplate aesthetics and the visual and conceptual values of contemporary art.The author attempts to establish to what extent the contemporary paradigm of “being and artist” can relate to “ex libris artists.” For this purpose, he describes a conglomerate of creative qualities of the most interesting contemporary bookplate creators, answering the question as to what extent is the art of ex libris in its graphic aspect faithful to tradition and to what extent it follows contemporaneity.Even though ex libris artists draw upon past achievements in the field of aesthetics – a fact which is accentuated – regarding it sometimes from an argumentative and sometimes a conflicting perspective, they always function within their context. As such, the author unambiguously distinguishes between bookplate creators who participate and co-shape the evolution of art from representatives of a second decade of the twenty-first century popular graphic trend which negates the achievement of twentieth century art.In the final part of the article, the author delineates the basic dilemmas of the didactics of ex libris in the era of art, where “anything goes.” He stresses the role of the ability to impose limits upon self and to subordinate certain aspects of the vision to the requirements of the genre. He perceives in the limitations of the convention a chance for the development of artistic ex libris, acknowledging that some artists want to create verifiable works which are subject to described rules and principles.

- Summary/Abstract:As a participant in the discourse concerned with the themes of the project “Here and now,” I would like to present several of my thirteen Engrams – traces of memory (artistic experiences).Post – graphic objectsA single graphic object or installation, situated in a new context, in the snow, water, fire, an apartment or a gallery, becomes a post – graphic object.Mobile tubeAnother series of open air experiments – in my graphic imaging, mountains or seacoast became a training ground for new experiences, in the face of nature, my thinking changed, making graphics “mobile.”Press transformationI created a representation of concave printing presses as a light installation. I built it out of overexposed presses in multiple layers, revealing their transparent, multiplied graphic image. On the training ground of art. Open air practice became for me a “Training ground” – an artistic research field, which I sometimes share with another artist.ApeironThe objects which I used became a „leaven” of activity, and their discovered performative value started the process of an artistic de-logicalization of their original mundane functions, in order for them to acquire a new logic in the sphere of art.Poles, or on the collaboration of artists“Poles,” or more specifically “Graphic poles” – constitute my own project. It originated in the need of an encounter and dialogue with another artist, providing an opportunity of showing “polar” representations of Polish and international artistic circles.Graphic shamanismA secondary usage of several props and intentional gestures, together with a new supplement of ritualistic actions and a sequence of events, were to revalue the image of the original performance held open air in Żywiec Beskids. The new performance was an attempt at a reflection on the theme of repetitions.Dialogues with fellow artists“Hommage a Tomasz Struk” – a graphic installation devoted to the memory of the outstanding artists refers to a reflection over his art, leaving a memory trace within me. In aqua scribireA synesthetic “In aqua scribere” is an installation which combines image, music and movement subordinated to natural laws. It is film recording of a fragment of performative actions. My artistic experiences radicalized in face of nature. Perhaps in these several described Engrams – emanations of creative experiences, I perceive an opportunity of inscribing myselfinto the multiple relations between ecology and art.

- Summary/Abstract:Against the radically changing character of art, an artist-pedagogue faces new challenges connected with the modification of current methods of teaching. This postulate also relates to the sphere of the theory of art, particularly classes in art history held for art degree courses. A certain dissonance can be perceived between expectations, intellectual competence of students and the methodology employed during classes, which originates in Erwin Panofsky’s iconology which demands a thorough preparation from the field of humanities. It seems that a modification of classes is currently needed, which would take advantage of the natural potential for visual sensitivity of artistically gifted young people. Apart from the necessary dose of knowledge, classes on history of art should stimulate creativity of students and teach them how to verbalize their aesthetic experiences. For this purpose, one can use new methods of analysis of works, offered by the so-called New Art History or Visual Culture Study, which would concentrate not on contextual study but on exploring the phenomenon of the work in its visual aspect.For this purpose, experimental classes were held, which used new methods and a questionnaire was later conducted among students. A similar questionnaire was conducted on traditional classes which were held as part of the history of art block. As a result of the questionnaire, it turned out that the new method – a compilation of approaches to art offered by the iconic method, hermeneutics, the method of studying visual materials created by Gillian Rose, the “good eye” theory of Irit Rogoff or considering art in literary context – was accepted by students and had more supporters than the previously employed one (the questionnaire results are attached in the supplement).

- Summary/Abstract:The text is a transcript of the inauguration lecture delivered on the occasion of the opening of the academic year 2018/2019 in the Cieszyn faculties of the University of Silesia. The author undertakes the subject of the ubiquity of visual communication, graphic design in the broadly-understood public sphere. Graphic design is an element of our visual culture, we take advantage of its practical dimension, frequently without realizing its importance. The essence of visual communication in briefly discussed, which is expressed in the synergy of image and text. The author presents examples of the didactic aspect of graphic design, its servile role for educational processes. He also gives the most important examples of daily used graphic design, e.g. Helvetica font. Design turns out to be a practical discipline and a tool important for the aesthetic dimension of the visual space.
