Summary/Abstract: The book deals with the situation of literary studies after post-structuralist turn. Era, when they were growing out of a single theory is a closed chapter in the discussed currents of research. The theory treated literature as an aggregate multiplying the information efficiency of a message, now the opposite vision appears: literature as a reset, a suspension of our cognitive power, a waste (potlatch). "Theory" is the "nickname" for texts that challenge disciplinary boundaries. Adapting to the new situation means a shift towards cultural studies or "service provision", which defenders of the humanities and literary studies oppose, seeing their role in founding the university and democracy.
