Summary/Abstract: The article discusses Polish reception of L.M. Montgomery‘s debut novel "Anne of Green Gables" in the context of cultural annexation (a term derived from cultural appropriation). The entire work of the Canadian writer is a publishing phenomenon in Poland, especially concerning her first novel, which to this day has been translated 15 times. The author renders the backstage of the first Polish edition (1911/1912) and the further reception history of Montgomery’s work in Poland throughout the century, mentioning later translations – emphasising the first polemical one (2003) by Agnieszka Kuc, which stands out as the first act of resisting the traditional domesticating and adaptive approach to the novel and initiating a translatological debate upon L.M. Montgomery’s reception in Poland. The author also contributes and analyzes a new factor to the discussion on the unprecedented popularity of "Anne of Green Gables" in Poland: the sense of nature, a highly domesticated literary motive.
