- Summary/Abstract:The article analyses the Polish translation of the anonymous Catalonian mystical allegory "Spill de la vida religiosa" (1515) and its sources. The translation, authored by Kasper Wilkowski, a Catholic convert and a medic to Prince Mikołaj Krzysztof Radziwiłł, was published for the first time in 1589 as "Desiderosus abo ścieżka do Miłości Bożej i do doskonałości żywota chrześcijańskiego" [Desiderosus, or the Path to Divine Love and to the Perfection of Christian Life], gaining immediate popularity and three more editions before the end of the century. The existing scholarship knows it to be based on the Latin translation published in 1583 in Dillingen. However, that Latin edition lacked Part II of the original work, which included the discourse about contemplative prayer. Although Wilkowski openly declared in his preface that he also used handwritten materials, their nature has never been investigated. The authoress of the article argues that the unknown manuscript might have included a copy of the Italian translation of the "Spill de la vida religiosa", which allowed Wilkowski to add the missing part and to compile a text surprisingly faithful to the Catalonian original, in spite of some abridgements. In general, Wilkowski also managed to preserve the universalistic and the confessionally transparent character of the original work, which then inspired Orthodox Ruthenian translators. In 1625, a Ruthenian writer Kasjan Sakowicz republished Wilkowski’s Desiderosus, adding his own preface, in which he attested to the existence of some (today unknown) Ruthenian translations into ‘prosta mova’, one of which he had authored himself. It is therefore possible that the well known Church Slavonic translation of Desiderosus, written in 1688 by the archdeacon Theophan, could have been – as Mirosława Hanusiewicz-Lavallee argues – based not only on Kasper Wilkowski’s Polish version, but also rooted in this Kyivian Ruthenian tradition.

- Summary/Abstract:The article presents the examples of feminine amatory discourse conducted by men. Ovid’s Heroides are the point of reference to which the authors of love letters often referred more or less consciously. The Polish seventeenth and contemporary translations of "Heroides" as well as the translations of "The Portuguese Letters" (1669), attributed to the Portuguese nun Mariana Alcoforado are recalled here. It proves that men’s authorship is quite visible in those texts as well as Ovid’s “prototype”. It seems that “feminine” love letters were to a certain extent a kind of refined game between the author and the reader, as well as of the translators of both texts.

- Summary/Abstract:In the article I present "Pieśń świętojańska o sobótce" (The Song of the Midsummer Sabbath) as a suggestive design for country life, assimilated in the Sarmatian culture in a series of stereotypes of the happy rural abode and life in harmony with the natural and human environment, family and neighbours. Kochanowski’s recipe designates a roll-call of values (the freedom and respect enjoyed by a Polish country gentleman, the cultivation of his ancestral traditions, his observance of the traditional holidays and festivals, customs, and amusements, his contentment with the produce grown on his own land, marital and parental love, respect for the older generation, joie de vivre and mirth); and of antivalues (trade and business activities, life at court, and risky travel undertaken for lucre). I draw attention to the complex layering of inventio in this poem and the poet’s ambition to obtain a blend of the vernacular, ancient, contemporary, native and European traditions. I observe the literary game Kochanowski plays with his own "Elegies" written in Latin and at the same time with the Roman poems: Virgil’s "Georgics" and "Eclogues", and — especially — with Horace’s "Epode II Beatus ille qui procul negotiis", turning "Pieśń świętojańska o sobótce" and Epode II into a standard pair of model texts imitated by 17th-century poets unaware of the deeper meanings latent in them.

- Summary/Abstract:The four Old Polish prose novels: "Historia wdzięczna o szlachetnej a pięknej Meluzynie", "Historia o Magielonie, krolewnie neapolitańskiej", "Historia piękna i krotochwilna o Otonie, cesarzu rzymskim" and Fortunat form a single and special group in the panorama of the16th century Polish prose. They were translated from German into Polish towards the end of the Jagiellonian period, and in literary history they are referred to as the first Polish chivalric romances; moreover, they have acquired the status of long-sellers in Polish literature. A comparison of the Polish texts with their German originals allows an insight into the translation strategies that contributed to the popularity of these texts with Polish audiences, and also opens up questions about their genre attribution. The paper compiles what has been established so far in Polish and German research on these four prose novels (the editorial work of Julian Krzyżanowski in the 1920s and 1930s made it possible for the two German Slavists, Jurij Striedter and Witold Kośny, to examine the Fortunatus and Octavianus stories in the 1960s), and extends their findings to include a comparative analysis of the Polish and German Melusine and Maguelone stories.

- Summary/Abstract:The paper analyzes the ways of translating New Testament’s cultural realities by Jakub Wujek (and his collaborators) during various stages of preparing the version of the Bible (editions of the "Catholic Postil", 1579–1590, the "New Testament" of 1593 and the "Bible" of 1599). In the first part („Examples”) the author discusses samples of the translation containing cultural realities (such as "sabbatum, Pascha, drachma, paedagogus"), comparing them with other Polish versions of the era. The second part („Tendencies of Acculturation”) interprets different ideas of acculturation as an important part of Polish Jesuits’ different, conflicting strategies for translating the Bible. The interpretation is based on the analysis of historical sources, and places these theoretical programmes in the context of Reformation and Counter-Reformation in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth.

- Summary/Abstract:The presented paper discusses the modifications observed in the Polish polemical text entitled "Trajedyja o Mszej" [Tragedy on Mass] (1560) by Bernardino Ochino, as compared with the hypothetical original text in Italian, "Disputa intorno alla presenza del corpo di Giesu Christonel sacramento della cena" (1561). The changes introduced to the Polish translation were analyzed in terms of genre adaptation as well as stylistic and factual alternations. From the perspective of the chosen genre of the text, the Polish version was conversed into a dramatic structure due to a parallel with another Polish translation of Ochino, the previously printed "Trajedyja o zwierzchności papieskiej" [Tragedy on the Papal supremacy] (1558), while the Italian version was constructed as a sermon cycle. On the other hand, the detailed innovations present in the text were also observed: the Polish translator modified the Italian original with using Polish-specific proverbial or set phrases, adapting the polemical etymologies to the features of the Polish language, as well as introducing factual modifications, more swiftly explaining the points given in the text to the reality of the Polish-speaking readers.

- Summary/Abstract:The purpose of this paper is to re-examine Yang Guangxian’s famous treatise "Bu de yi" ("I Cannot do Otherwise") in the light of the Jesuit strategies for transferring knowledge from Europe to China. The first part of the article provides a discussion on the Chinese terms used by the missionaries to refer to their translation projects undertaken in China, such as ‘translating’ (yi, 譯) and ‘disseminating’ (chuan, 傳), and demonstrates how both of these words were adopted to justify the transmission of science and religion between the two civilisations. The concepts of yi and chuan were later reinterpreted by Yang Guangxian, who aimed to reveal various conscious decisions behind Jesuit translations and prove that what they wanted to present as a natural and selfless act of evangelization was in fact a result of numerous manipulations of the original texts. Parts two and three of the article offer a detailed examination of Bu de yi with particular focus on the way Yang used the Confucian tradition of the ‘rectification of names’ ("zheng ming, 正名") in order to counter the missionaries’ strategy of accommodation, and ultimately reclaim the terms they had earlier appropriated for their proselytizing purposes.

- Summary/Abstract:Maria Konopnicka’s poems inspired by her travels to Italy have been repeatedly translated into Italian between 1916 and 1929 and published in literary magazines and in a book form. The team composed of the essayist and publisher Ettore Cozzani, the historian and diplomat Maciej Loret and his wife Władysława Zapolska produced a version that reveals a significant manipulation of the source text, often transforming it by means of techniques such as amplification, specification, modulation, reduction, rationalization. The translations made by the sisters Clotilde and Cristina Garosci tend instead to reproduce the word order, syntactic figures, and poetic imagery of the source text, raising its linguistic register through lexical ennoblement and archaization. Though both teams translated poetry into prose and considered translation as ancillary to the source text, a comparative analysis of their versions shows a different approach to Konopnicka’s poems that ultimately depends on different views on language, work methods, and attitude to the Italian poetic tradition. Their reception illustrates that translation of poetry into prose was generally accepted by critics of that time, as it was supposed to preserve the “soul” of the source text, though giving up its form.

- Summary/Abstract:The article discusses Polish reception of L.M. Montgomery‘s debut novel "Anne of Green Gables" in the context of cultural annexation (a term derived from cultural appropriation). The entire work of the Canadian writer is a publishing phenomenon in Poland, especially concerning her first novel, which to this day has been translated 15 times. The author renders the backstage of the first Polish edition (1911/1912) and the further reception history of Montgomery’s work in Poland throughout the century, mentioning later translations – emphasising the first polemical one (2003) by Agnieszka Kuc, which stands out as the first act of resisting the traditional domesticating and adaptive approach to the novel and initiating a translatological debate upon L.M. Montgomery’s reception in Poland. The author also contributes and analyzes a new factor to the discussion on the unprecedented popularity of "Anne of Green Gables" in Poland: the sense of nature, a highly domesticated literary motive.

- Summary/Abstract:In this article, I have tried to outline the difficulties that could be faced while translating Wyspiański’s "Wesele" ("The Wedding"). By analyzing two German translations of this drama – by Henryk Bereska and Karl Dedecius, I have presented the possible reasons for its untranslatability. Having outlined a short history of the earlier “approaches” to the German translation of "Wesele" and starting from the concept of cultureme and the theory of L. Venuti’s domestication and foreignization, I tried to show why it is not possible to fully domesticate the whole drama, assimilating it into the German realities. The real measure of the play’s untranslatability is the number of culturemes it contains. They are the elements of the text, which significantly hinder the “annexation” of Wyspiański’s play. As an example of such a problematic cultureme, I discussed the romantic background, which was clearly visible in the 15 Scene of Act 2 (the conversation between "Upiór" and "Dziad"). Due to the lack of German romantic dramas, which would be as important for German culture as, for example, the dramas of Mickiewicz are important for the Polish reality, and which could serve as a reference point for a German reader or viewer, this romantic background becomes untranslatable. Another example of cultureme in that it is set against Polish historical background. On the other hand, the 8 Scene of the Act 1 shows how difficult it is to translate the clash of various linguistic registers, which Wyspiański very often changes in this play and which are the key to the interpretation and understanding the problems in communication between the peasantry and representatives of the intelligentsia.

- Summary/Abstract:The article presents a practical-theoretical reflection on translating humorous poetry on the basis of the author’s experience as a translator of Wisława Szymborska’s "Rymowanki dla dużych dzieci" ("Rhymes for Big Kids"). Since humor is the dominant function of the text, and laugh is the expected reaction, functional equivalence – rather than the semantic one – is to be pursued here. The goal of any translator of humorous texts is to produce the equivalent effect on the reader. In the case of Szymborska’s "Rymowanki", the task is made more difficult by the poetic form, which plays a primary role in generating the comic effect. The author observes that the three categories of joke – universal, cultural and linguistic – proposed by Debra Raphaelson-West do not take into account such highly formalized utterings as humorous verses, in which the form is not a mere decoration aiming at potentiating the aesthetic effect, but definitely contributes to generating the humorous effect. The article shows how the mechanisms of laugh/smile proper of these poetic texts were reproduced in translation following some simple principles, and ends with the suggestion to add a fourth category to Raphaelson-West’s classification: a poetic joke.

- Summary/Abstract:A nonconformist and demystifier, Gombrowicz made irony and paradox his tools to implement a grotesque subversion of reality, customs and literary tradition (his essay“ Against the Poets” angered Giuseppe Ungaretti). In order to challenge and destroy the conventional forms, principles and rules on which social life and culture itself are based, the writer had to engage in a similar venture also on the linguistic front, creating a personal style – rebellious, mocking, unpredictable – suitable for executing his literary and philosophical exploration outside of the usual patterns and canons. Through careful examination of the writer’s short stories dating back to the interwar period, the essay highlights the characteristics of the young Gombrowicz’s language by relating them to a precise writing strategy that would find its full realization in his most famous future novels. Subsequently, it is highlighted how some stylistic and rhetorical procedures of his writing (irony, desecration, repetition, intertextuality, neo-semantization) needed to be replicated in the translation passage in order to implement a similar “transgression of the signifier” involving models and structures as well as the grammar of the Italian language.

- Summary/Abstract:Tadeusz Boy-Żeleński abandoned his career as a medical doctor to fully commit himself to the popularisation of French literature and culture amongst the Polish readership. By the time of his untimely death in 1941, he had translated around a hundred works of thirty-five French authors. Although he translated the works of early and modern literature – ranging from La Chanson de Roland to Marcel Proust’s magnum opus – he preferred the former period. Apart from his impressive work as a translator, Boy went to great lengths to popularise his translations in his translator’s prefaces and introductions as well as series of readings and lectures on French literature, which helped him gain recognition in French and Polish academic circles. Seemingly haphazard, the choice of literary works for translation revealed a consistency of Boy’s idea of French literature, which, for him, was to combine reflection, reason, the profoundly human character, clarity, and comprehensibility. This idea led the translator to favour readability and adherence to the meaning of the source text over verbal equivalence. This translation method allowed Boy to take sometimes farreaching liberties with the French source texts. The quality of the Polish language in these translations is also truly impressive. Boy employed a wealth of registers and styles, wide-ranging vocabulary, and phraseology. Boy’s unmatched command of his mother tongue enabled him not only to introduce the astonishing canon of French literature to the Polish reader, but also, as noted by Jan Błoński, “write a (missing) chapter of the history of Polish literature. ”Boy’s incomparable translation skills deterred many translators from offering new translations of the works formerly translated by him for years to come. This impasse has been recently overcome as new translations of the works of Molière, Racine, or Proust have begun to emerge. Despite these noble efforts, the position of the “Shakespeare of translation” remains uncontested.
