Summary/Abstract: The aim of the paper is to encourage companies to critically consider the opportunities, challenges and approaches for entering the Japanese market. It is a conceptual paper, based on literature review, observation, and analytical reasoning. Although Japan is facing daunting economic and demographic challenges, the country avails of and builds on a remarkable set of advantages. Companies should carefully take stock of their resources and reflect how to use them in view of the peculiarities of the Japanese environment. Intercultural competence – at a company, team, and individual level, is a critical success factor for foreign firms, aspiring to enter and operate on the Japanese market. The paper offers some directions about the potential of the Japanese market and also serves as an impetus for specific actions to be undertaken by interested parties.
