Summary/Abstract: Tourism influences several sectors of the economy. In regional development, tourism is a significant source of incomes, employment, improvement of competitiveness and effective instrument for interregional cooperation. The development of tourism in the region cannot be isolated, but it has to be in accordance with the principles of sustainable development. The concept of sustainable development is part of the planning at national, regional and local level. The aim of this paper is to evaluate the influence of sustainable tourism as a factor of regional development. The object of this study is the Banská Bystrica region as a self-governing unit. The influence of tourism on regional development is evaluated using the selected indicators of sustainable tourism development. The material consists of data from the Statistical Office of the Slovak Republic, the Ministry of Transport and Construction of the Slovak Republic and selected municipalities. The data are processed by methods of descriptive statistics. The article explains the importance of sustainable tourism in the development of the Banská Bystrica region using the indicators of sustainable tourism development.
