Summary/Abstract: According to the institutional approaches to regional development theories the causes of regional disparities are often explained. These approaches emphasize the importance of innovation and knowledge for developing and sustaining competitive advantage. Innovation and the ability to create innovative products constitute a significant advantage for the regions, stimulating job creation and economic development. Innovation plays an equally important role in the field of tourism. According to the researchers, the implementation of innovation differentiates tourism product, increases its competitiveness and thereby generates additional socioeconomic benefits. The aim of this paper is to provide a comprehensive overview of the utilization of innovation in tourist destinations, its implementation and benefits for destinations. Innovations are also mentioned in connection with the concept of destination governance, inspired by the management of companies.
