Summary/Abstract: The translation of local-colour elements is one of the most often-discussed problems in the translation of artistic literature. Although it is generally considered that these elements are usually weakened in the translation, they should not be overlooked. As a main working hypothesis, we accept that the culture-specific elements of the translation are mostly lost. To examine this problem, we will use the translatological analysis of selected short stories and novels from the collection of the Bulgarian author Yordan Radichkov—Six Small Matryoshkas and a Big One and Memories of Horses. The main aim of our translatological analysis is to find out how the local colour of Bulgarian works was weakened, deformed or preserved and the possible emotional effect on the Czech readers. The focus of our interest is not only the translation transformations but also the reception of literary works in different language environments.
