Summary/Abstract: Although many studies show that the effects and learning outcomes are better if students themselves (or with guidance) discover new mathematical content, we are witnessing that teaching in our schools is based on demonstration and repetition. Namely, teacher expose, demonstrate and explain new contents and after that, students do similar tasks using the "recipe" they had seen. In contrast, the teaching system, called problem based learning, allows students and teachers the opportunity to avoid shortcomings in traditional mathematics teaching, and to prioritize the thoughtful activity of students in learning new content (Pjanić-Lipovača, 2014).37The aim of this paper is to investigate which strategies and methods for solving arithmetic word problems were used by those students of the 5th grade taught by system of problem based learning and those who attended traditional lessons. The research results point to the benefits of problem based learning of mathematics which are reflected in the "retreat" of the "set up and solve the equation" strategy.
