Summary/Abstract: In this paper, we will address at the principles of scientific research, which also apply to scientific research in education, and thus to mathematics education. On the basis of these principles, research in education should be created and implemented.Starting from the formulation of significant research questions as the first principle of scientific research, researchers need to find a research path(s) that will effectively and without violating other principles of scientific research provide answers and conclusions and enable improvements in the learning and teaching process.The focus of this paper is on the formulation of significant research questions in education and the paradigm of research - the assumptions that determine the purpose of research in (mathematics) education and the guidelines on how it will be carried out.
