Summary/Abstract: This paper examines the understanding of media texts and their role as a prerequisite for media literacy among high school students. It was developed based on several studies on students‘ reading skills, a key element of functional literacy. The questions addressed within the paper concern the role of media texts in education, as well as how they enhance students‘ reading skills and their development as persons with high potential for success in society. It concludes that media texts are a resource that – when used aptly – can increase the levels of reading literacy and functional literacy among students.
