Summary/Abstract: This presentation is part of a broader research project, in which I will examine the representation of the puszta as a typical motif of the national image in Hungarian literature. Through analyses of different works, I will trace how Hungarian literature of the first half of the twentieth century deconstructs this image that was woven around the representation of the Puszta in Hungarian literature from Romanticism onwards. In this presentation, I will examine the naturalistic narratives of turn-of-the-century short story writers, who can be seen as the precursors of the twentieth-century change of perspective, focusing mainly on the work of Zsigmond Justh.
