- Summary/Abstract:In the past decades, Hungarian critics, researchers, teachers acting in the universe of literature have learned to respect Theory.In the academic world and in elite criticism, theoretical reason has gained substantive importance, poststructuralist catechism has guided understanding as an indispensable guide, and it has seemed self-evident that the path to authentic literary understanding leads through theory.Under these circumstances, a multi-perspective, reflective examination of theory and an account of its problematic aspects have not taken place.Yet, a similar debate had already taken place in American literary studies in the 1980s, and György Poszler’s 1988 monograph sharply criticized Hegel’s and György Lukács’s philosophical aesthetics.(Conservative philosophers Edmund Burke, Tamás Molnár, Roger Scruton, and others are also distrustful of system creation and consider as problematic those attitudes of thought that “can only accept answers formulated within the framework of an elaborate system.”) It is also timely to open a debate on the validity of understanding the “Big Theoretical Bang”.All the more so because several internationally renowned European and American philosophers, linguists, and literary scholars (René Wellek, M.H.Abrams, Tzvetan Todorov, John Searle, Geoffrey Galt Harpham, Roy Harris, Martha Nussbaum) have contributed comprehensive perspectives to criticism.The lecture will first build on their well-established critical perspectives, then will also discuss the spread of poststructuralism in Hungary, and finally, reflecting on the raison d’être of Theory and literary theory, it will evoke endeavours of literary theory which seek to preserve moderation and prudence as fundamental values, to avoid substantive fixations, to transcend one-sided confrontations and strive for a verifying criticism of concepts, while they attempt at unifying deduction with induction, and regard the task, function, and vocation of theory as assisting the understanding of literature.

- Summary/Abstract:The characteristics of the genre popular in 19th-century European literature, at least in the Byronic-Puskinian tradition, are surprisingly well-defined in Hungarian literature, or at least as far as the traditional understanding of verse novels is concerned. In the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century, the use of the ottava rima and the Onegin stanza, as well as variations of these forms were quiet common. The connection in form is usually not a stand-alone phenomenon; it is also accompanied by thematic similarities, which can be found at the level of tropes, plot patterns, and allusions. One of the rarer forms of intertextual relations, interfigurality, can also be part of these attachments. This can be as obvious and clear as in the case of a recurring literary character, for example the title character of Marcell Benedek’s The Resurrection of Don Juan, or a subtle connection, a combination, and/or contamination, like the protagonists of László Arany’s verse novels Hero of Mirages and János Térey’s Paulus, can be related to Pushkin’s Eugene Onegin. The paper aims to map some of the potential genre characteristics of the verse novel with the help of the examined connections in the verse novel of Hungarian literature.

- Summary/Abstract:Presenting the relationship between the individual and power, the Transylvanian Hungarian poetry of the 1980s focuses increasingly on the language game, ironic/allegoric self-reflection, and on allusions to real events and persons. From a stylistic/poetic point of view, this orientation can be considered important not only because in the ideological/political context of the 80s the progressively efficient censorship prevented a growing number of writers from publishing their works or actively participating in public cultural forums, but because this change of perspective in Transylvanian Hungarian literature indicates theappearance of a form of discourse which requires less and less social engagement and moves away from the forms of attitude that wish to address all members of a particular community. In these poems, self-irony, rhetorical game, the mutilated or deformed words, and the nonsense serve the same purpose as the increasingly incomprehensible allegorization, viz. the exposure of the machinery of power whose activity insidiously undermines culture, language, and identity, but at the same time, in a certain socio-political context, it highlights the morally disputable character of the petty compromises of literary life functioning in the shadow of the communist dictatorship. The presentation seeks those tendencies of self-representation and identity of the Transylvanian Hungarian poetry that could be connected to the changes of the social-political context and communist power control before the 1989 regime change.

- Summary/Abstract:This presentation is part of a broader research project, in which I will examine the representation of the puszta as a typical motif of the national image in Hungarian literature. Through analyses of different works, I will trace how Hungarian literature of the first half of the twentieth century deconstructs this image that was woven around the representation of the Puszta in Hungarian literature from Romanticism onwards. In this presentation, I will examine the naturalistic narratives of turn-of-the-century short story writers, who can be seen as the precursors of the twentieth-century change of perspective, focusing mainly on the work of Zsigmond Justh.

- Summary/Abstract:The present exposé aims to place esoteric, predominantly astrological indicators in the work of Tamás Deák. The author captures the hypostasis of a man living under the sign of Saturn. We see how the life of an adult marked with the energy of a restrictive but at the same time benefic planet unfolds in the sphere of human relationships and in the individual’s psychological life. Tamás Deák creates a universe that seems grey to the untrained eye. But this universe contains a multitude of multicoloured nuances of subjective experiences. The destiny of the individual suppressed by their own existence but free from the bonds of others seems exciting and seductive. The character ruled by Saturn illustrates only a part of the personality that contemporary man tends to repress. The author’s work is all the more important because the time in which it is published is itself restrictive, like Saturn. But this does not limit the individual in expressing their own being, sexuality, intuition, subtle knowledge. For all these reasons, Tamás Deák recovers for the modern man what he has forgotten or lost.

- Summary/Abstract:At the end of the 18th century, the gates of Europe opened up and offered new ways and opportunities to those who wanted to get to know the culture: significant pilgrimage routes led both north-west and south, thanks to which dozens of students got to know new cultural and philosophical phenomena, such as Freemasonry, Arcadian-circles, the development of indigenous literature, or the collection of folk tales, the promotion of folk culture into discourse. In my presentation, I will present a micro-example, through the scientific and cultural transfers of the city of Eger, how the currents of ideas coming from outside influenced the life of a patron, Károly Eszterházy, the structure and the curriculum of a university, the cultural life of the city, and based on these, what traces can be observed in the literary life that is currently being redefined, in our linguistic and literary conceptual system (mainly thanks to Sámuel Pápay’s literary work), or in the creation of new mythologies – closely related to folk tales.

- Summary/Abstract:The phenomenon of the Japanese Anime emerged in the discourse of the working group formed for the purposes of the preparation of the curriculum for teaching grammar and literature in Hungarian secondary schools in Vojvodina as a topic that could interest and address generation Z, as called in generational marketing, whose members will study in line with the educational models laid down here and thus. This generation, called “digital natives” by Marc Prensky (1946), encompasses people born in the late 1990s or later, whose lives are shaped by the development of digital technologies, unimaginable without the use of mobile phones and other digital communication devices. It is for this reason that the structures that guide education policy should either accept this direction, or we shall completely fail in raising, educating, and training this given generation. Therefore, we need to understand this concept of the world and its phenomena, which are primarily based on visual representations such as Anime, the subject of our study. In the course of our research, we have analysed and interpreted several Anime series on various themes, and then sought to find answers to the question of how it is possible and what motifs and meanings lead to a phenomenon from a rather distant culture to become so popular, appealing, and a model of behaviour and worldviews, even among young people brought up in European traditions.

Usually they are third-rate characters, but the way they are portrayed says a lot about the way Poles see Hungarians and their language. - Summary/Abstract:The Christmas Pig is a children’s novel for children aged 8 and up, the first by J. K. Rowling since the publication of the last Harry Potter novel, and one of the bestsellers of Christmas 2021. The Hungarian translation, also published in 2021, is the work of Tamás Boldizsár Tóth, also known as “Rowling’s Hungarian voice”. In my presentation, I will explore the forms of intertextuality in the novel, the Genettian transtextuality, how this children’s novel incorporates traces of various ancient and medieval genres, how it engages in dialogue with some works of the world literary canon, and how this web of intertextual relations connects the children’s novel with major works of world literature. The children’s novel, whose hypotexts were world literature texts and genres, can itself become a hypotext in the process of reading: it can make texts belonging to the canon accessible to the future reader. Jack, The Pig and Christmas Pig’s story opens a gateway to the travels of Odysseus and Aeneas in the underworld, to the medieval moralities, to Dante’s Divine Comedy, to the of Christian saints and knights harrowing of hell, to Dickens’ A Christmas Carol, to E. T. A. Hoffmann’s (and of course Tchaikovsky’s) Nutcracker and The Mouse King.

- Summary/Abstract:In recent years, I have translated eight Spanish contemporary dramas to Hungarian, all of them belonging to the theatre of memory movement (teatro de la memoria). During the translation process, I was confronted with the question of how a national trauma can be translated, transmitted, and “sold” in another language. The plays were a resounding success in their home country for all Spanish people are familiar with the two great national traumas of the 20th century: the Civil War and the Franco dictatorship. Spanish audiences have a visceral understanding of these texts: many have relatives who were murdered, buried in mass graves, imprisoned, or exiled. The interpretation of these plays by Spanish people is therefore supported and influenced not only by the historical and cultural knowledge they have learned in school but also by the emotional factors related to the past that they have personally experienced or inherited from their parents or grandparents. However, audiences of other nationalities who are situated outside the context that inspires the plays belonging to the theatre of memory do not have the same references and the same historical, social, and cultural knowledge as Spanish people. In this presentation, through the examples of eight plays translated to Hungarian, I would like to illustrate some of the dilemmas I have encountered in my translation work.

- Summary/Abstract:Silviu Purcărete’s career as a director began in the 1970s. The first part of his career could not develop to its full potential because of an oppressive political system. After 1989, he had the opportunity to show his work to foreign audiences. The international career has continued since then and has been mostly successful. Thanks to the director’s openness, one of the watchwords of his stage productions in different countries could be interculturality. The main characteristic of Silviu Purcărete’s theatre is variety. To write my paper, I have chosen two of the many options: humour and playfulness.

- Summary/Abstract:László I (Sainct Ladislau, 1040–1095) is the most popular of the Hungarian saints, a true medieval athleta Christi, who fought against the pagan Cumaeans and Pechenegs. His name is linked in Hungarian folklore with the legend of the formation of the Turda Gorge, saying that the land was opened between the king and the Cumaeans who pursued him. Another episode of his legend is immortalized by the murals of thirty churches in Transylvania, which capture the duel with the Cumaean host for the release of the kidnapped girl. The message of the legend is the triumph of Christianity over the pagans. At the same time, the freckles bear a much older and universal symbolism: the triumph of light over darkness. A romantic reinterpretation by Mihály Vörösmarty from 1825 evokes the battle presented on the frieze from a unique perspective, which is related to a scene presented in the church of Sepsikilyén (Chileni). A reincarnation of the legend of Prince Csaba is the miracle of this holy king. The Hun prince descends into the Milky Way to help his Szekler descendants whenever they need support. According to this legend, the equestrian statue of King László of Oradea comes to life and appears at the head of the Hungarian armies during their battle with the Tatars in 1241. János Arany’s 1853 poem reinterprets this legend.The paper tries to find answers to the following questions: what was the symbolism of the figure of the king when the friezes were made? what did it mean to evoke him in the period of national Romanticism? what do these works of art represent from the perspective of the contemporary receiver?

- Summary/Abstract:The aim of this paper is to treat the problem of traductibility of toponyms from the perspective of the possible equivalence between place names originally coined in Hungarian and their translation into Romanian. The linguistic corpus used for illustrating the methods and possibilities of translation contains the existent equivalents of toponyms in Transylvania, Romania. The study is based on exploring the possibilities of forming toponyms, both in source and target language, and their translations. Equivalence implies a correspondence between the two members of different sets, the source language and the target language; it is a relationship within which the terms considered to be equivalent are in a logical, semantic, and pragmatic correlation. However, this situation is not appliable in the case of toponyms, hence the interest in this particular domain of traductology. This paper intends to analyse the existent cases of equivalence regarding toponyms and the translation methods used to correspond the terms of source and target languages. To do so, we examine the toponyms from three perspectives: fully traductible, partially traductible, and untraductible ones. Apart from expecting interesting findings, one of the main objectives of this study is to fill a scientific void by creating an applicable precedent for upcoming similar studies in bi- or multilingual areas.

- Summary/Abstract:In this paper, I will present all the surnames of the 17th century which are related to Csíkszentlélek [RO: Liliceni] according to the sources available to me at the moment. As a result of this research, the reader can learn the meaning of these names, compare their different spellings, and get an idea of the diversity of Szentlélek surnames. The exploration of the historical name material also provides an opportunity for a contrastive study of the name material of today and can thus also provide valuable data for those involved in name or genealogical research.

- Summary/Abstract:The present study deals with certain sociocultural and linguistic aspects related to the counties of Harghita, Covasna, and Mureş. Several nationalities live in these counties, and in regions characterized by bilingualism there is a particular linguistic landscape, where speakers use structures from their mother tongue in the second language as well. Second language learning is a dynamic process, and the motivation underlying L2 acquisition is influenced by language learning biases. In general, the official language learning takes place implicitly, given the natural context of daily life. But for people from Harghita, Covasna, and some localities in Mureş County, where speakers rarely use Romanian, but also for students who use it only at school (3-4 hours/week), Romanian can be considered a foreign language. In this context, people who succeed in acquiring the language at a productive level use word-for-word translations from their mother tongue when communicating in Romanian. Socio-cultural contacts may reorganize the language system, thus interference, code switching, borrowings, and linguistic calques can be observed both in written and oral texts because the same person alternatively uses two languages – Hungarian and Romanian –, and linguistic interchanges among bilinguals may include elements of both spoken languages. Furthermore, certain extra-linguistic factors, such as ethnicity, race, social class, sex, or age play a major role in language and language contact research. At the same time, the effectiveness of successful interethnic communication also depends on the mutual knowledge of culture, traditions, and customs.

- Summary/Abstract:Hungarian as a foreign language is a great challenge for Romanian-speaking students, as they have to absorb a foreign culture along with a completely foreign structure and function. Discovering a new language is also discovering a new culture. These two presuppose and complement each other. I have talked and written many times over the years about several pitfalls of learning Hungarian descriptive grammar and the possibilities of avoiding these pitfalls, but there are always new questions that have not yet been discussed. In this thesis, I would like to talk about relation words among the Hungarian word species groups, especially two relation words of morphological nature, the postpositions, and the verb particles, pointing out at the same time the means of expression of these words in Romanian. In Hungarian, the vocabulary group of relation words includes words whose autonomy is relative, temporary, and their function is sometimes very diverse. For example, verb particles range from concrete directional notation to abstract use, often accompanied by a change of meaning or nuance of verb approach (Szili 2011, p. 187).Among the general characteristics of relation words, I would like to emphasize that the communicative-pragmatic meaning of these words is primary (Keszler 2000: 69–71), and therefore they play an important and nuanced role in communication.
