THE INFLUENCE OF UNCERTAINTY ON MILITARY LEADERSHIP

Summary/Abstract: Today's increasingly complex and ambiguous security environment brings new challenges to military leadership, among which, dealing with uncertainty. In developing a vision and in the decision-making process, military leaders are often confronted with unknown and unpredictable variables, and in order to increase the level of decision-making effectiveness, it is necessary to adapt military leadership development to the particularities and trends of the security environment. In this context, it is important to recognize that military leadership development can be achieved by progressing in two dimensions: horizontal and vertical. While horizontal development ensures the acquisition of skills, vertical development focuses on developing a leader's mindset and way of thinking. From this perspective, in this article we will compare horizontal leadership development with vertical leadership development in an effort to identify a way in which military leadership can respond to tendencies in these security environment.
